The largest city in the Tohoku region, Sendai, is located in Miyagi Prefecture. Among the prefecture's abundance of natural scenic beauty are Matsushima—one of the three most famous views of Japan— and the breathtaking Zao. Blessed with mountains and the sea, Miyagi has a treasure trove of fresh foods. Some of the favorites are beef tongue from Sendai, shark fin from Kesennuma, and oysters from Matsushima.

Matsushima Bay is known as one of the three most famous views of Japan. Take a tour around Matsushima Bay on a large sightseeing boat and see the 260 plus islands decorating the bay. There are also many famous sightseeing spots, such as Zuiganji Temple and Godaido Temple, both closely related to Masamune Date, and plenty of places to savor local delicacies such as oysters and beef tongue skewers. Enjoy a journey full of history and culinary delights.

2 Days 1 Night Model Course

First Day
9:00Take the Tōhoku Shinkansen from Tōkyō Station.
10:30Arrive at Sendai Station.
11:00Take the Senseki Line from Sendai Station

Second Day

Miyagi: Discover and enjoy the nature of Zao2 Days 1 Night

The first day's highlights include the Okama, a circular crater lake symbolic of the Zao Mountains. The lake is also known as the Goshikinuma, the five-color lake with a mysterious natural beauty, as the surface of the lake changes color depending on the weather and other factors. Enjoy a stay in Togatta Onsen, which overlooks the breathtaking backdrop of the Zao Mountains. The second day includes a visit to a unique zoo where more than 100 foxes live free-range in the wilderness, and JR Fruit Park Sendai Arahama, a tourist farm where you can pick seasonal fruits throughout the year. Enjoy a trip filled with nature and plenty of activities.

    The fish market in Minamisanriku, closed due to the 2011 tsunami, has reopened, and Minamisanriku kirakira don, a rice bowl with octopus and sea urchin from southern Sanriku is once again available. Enjoy the fresh seafood of southern Sanriku, such as harutsuge don with octopus and silver salmon in spring, uni don in summer, akiuma don with returning bonito and fresh eel in autumn, and ikura (salmon egg) don in winter.

    When talking about Sendai cuisine, one can't forget gyutan (beef tongue), which is recognized in Japan as a traditional dish of Sendai. You can find it at over 100 restaurants in the city. Charcoal-grilled tongue with oxtail soup and mugigohan (white rice and barley), it is said that the more you chew, the better it tastes. Don't miss this Sendai specialty!
