Niigata Prefecture was a port of call for people traveling on Kitamaebune ships from the late Edo Era to mid-Meiji Era, eventually developing into a thriving port city.
This spurred a culture of omotenashi (hospitality), ranging from luxury restaurants to geisha, that brought in visitors and made merchants their fortunes.
On this trip, we will visit the villa of the Saito family, who were said to be one of the three major financial powers of the Niigata area.

Yamanashi has long been known for its grape cultivation.
They can be enjoyed fresh off the vine, but viticulture started taking hold during the westernization that occurred during the Meiji Era, and the area became known as the birthplace of the Japanese wine industry.
Yamanashi is now a major producer of Japanese wine, brewed locally using 100% domestic grapes, and continues to prosper, crafting wine on par with the most famous production regions in the world. In recent years, wine from the area has received high praise, earning awards in competitions both in Japan and abroad.
