Day.1

Train Suite Shiki-shima departs from Ueno Station.

  • A chef trained in Hong Kong and Beijing serves Chinese fare that is a feast for your taste buds and your eyes. Enjoy a painstakingly crafted selection of beautiful dishes made from fresh ingredients.
  • Located near the station of departure, Ueno Station, every seat in the restaurant boasts a view of the open kitchen. Bright flames spark before your eyes as chefs prepare your meal and deliver entertainment that is a feast of sights, sounds and smells unique to Chinese cuisine.
    Even on board, Japan’s plentiful ingredients and skills honed in China are harnessed to craft delicacies such as our house specialty "Ringoame" and other dishes that feel classic and homemade, yet authentically Chinese—we hope they mark the beginning of a pleasant journey!

Niigata Prefecture was a port of call for people traveling on Kitamaebune ships from the late Edo Era to mid-Meiji Era, eventually developing into a thriving port city.
This spurred a culture of omotenashi (hospitality), ranging from luxury restaurants to geisha, that brought in visitors and made merchants their fortunes.
On this trip, we will visit the villa of the Saito family, who were said to be one of the three major financial powers of the Niigata area.

  • We’ll guide you through the Niigata Saito Villa, which was built by the Saito family in 1918. Here, you’ll experience a sense of prosperity that lingers to this day in the incredible craftsmanship of the estate and its beautiful gardens.

  • Enjoy a special full-course French dinner prepared by Train Suite Shiki-shima executive chef Shigeru Sato that brings out the incredible flavors of the ingredients of Eastern Japan.
  • Succeeding cuisine and numerous considerations on Train Suite Shiki-shima, which have been built up by the supervisors, Nakamura and Iwasaki, I will create meals of imaginative narrativity, with great attention to the ingredients and a culture unique to each area.
    I am from Akita in northeastern Japan, which means that I have such a commitment, and always do my very best to highlight the most attractive points of each area through my cuisine.
    I am very much looking forward to welcoming the guests to Train Suite Shiki-shima.

Cocktail Hour

Enjoy a drink at Lounge Komorebi in Car 5.
Relax with a drink while watching the evening scenery from the train window. Lounge Komorebi in Car 5 is open to guests at all times apart from during meal service. [For the foreseeable future, Lounge Komorebi will be closed from 24:00 to 05:00 as a measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).]

Day.2

Arrive at Obasute Station.

The area around Obasute Station looks out over Zenkoji Daira (Nagano Basin), which was once known as one of “Japan’s three greatest views from a train”, along with Mt. Yatake from the old Hisatsu Line and Karikachi Pass from the former Nemuro Line. This is an early morning stop on the trip. Spend the morning relaxing as you enjoy the view from windows in the lounge, or head down to the platform to take in the scenery.

Depart Obasute Station.

Arrive at Shinonoi Station.

The area around Chikuma River, once covered in mulberry fields, boasts a sunny climate and well-drained soil. This makes it perfect for viticulture, so wineries starting popping up in the area one after another in recent years. Sometimes working together, and sometimes pitted against each other in friendly rivalry, the wineries have turned the area now known as the “Chikumagawa Wine Valley” into a place filled with passion and individuality.
We will visit either VILLA D'EST GARDENFARM AND WINERY or Manns Wines Komoro Winery on this trip.

    • Enjoy a seasonal menu that highlights the flavors of garden herbs and vegetables from local farms. From the large windows, take in a spectacular view of the vineyards below. On clear days, you’ll even be able to see as far as the “Northern Alps” (Hida Mountains).
    • We have specially crafted a breakfast menu unique to the area, simply prepared using locally-grown and home-grown fresh vegetables and herbs, as well as high-quality local cheeses, bread and charcuterie.
      Everything is made from scratch, from seasonal Shinshu fruit jam, to granola made from Tomi City’s specialty, Shinano walnuts.
      Enjoy your time on the plateau, taking in views of the early summer vineyards over a glass of wine.

    VILLA D'EST GARDENFARM AND WINERY

    • Essayist and painter Toyoo Tamamura came to this area and opened VILLA D'EST GARDENFARM AND WINERY in 2003. Its concept and the way of life it represents sparked the beginnings of what became the Chikumagawa Wine Valley.
      Take in gorgeous views of the vineyards nestled in natural splendor.

    Breakfast at Manns Wine Komoro Winery in Komoro City

    • Enjoy Japanese cuisine provided by Japanese Restaurant Karamatsu of Prince Hotel Karuizawa West.
    • Start your morning with a glass of komatsuna (mustard spinach) and apple juice. Spend the morning gazing over vineyards and gardens as you enjoy a beautifully presented assortment of delicacies complete with delicious Shinshu vegetables, Saku-grown Gorobei rice prepared in a traditional hagama (rice pot) and Shinshu miso.

    Manns Wines Komoro Winery

    • This winery was the one of the first to come to the area and begin cultivating grapes. Stroll through vineyards surrounded by magnificent natural beauty and Japanese gardens that evoke the fields and the climate of Shinshu.
      Train Suite Shiki-shima passengers will also receive a guided tour of the underground cellar that is usually closed to the public.

  • Hikariya-Nishi carries on the Matsumoto cultural tradition from a restaurant that is a renovated warehouse once owned by a merchant over 140 years ago during the Meiji Era. The dishes served here combine the natural sweetness of delicious vegetables from neighboring farms in Shinshu with new ideas that add an entirely unique flair.
  • Located at the foot of national treasure Matsumoto Castle, Hikariya-Nishi is a restaurant housed in the renovated Hikaruya warehouse, which was built by a prestigious merchant in 1886. Loved by both locals and tourists alike, the building is registered as a national “tangible cultural property” and the area is home to a wealth of arts, history and culture.
    The bountiful climate of Matsumoto results in an abundance of local agriculture from Azumino and the surrounding areas. Chef Tanabe maintains close relationships with more than 250 local farms. Carefully-cultivated ingredients are creatively combined in subtle, magical ways. Experience a small piece of Matsumoto technique at the end of your incredible journey aboard Train Suite Shiki-shima.
