Facilities

Green Cars on local trains are a paid service offering spacious seats and a relaxing atmosphere.
The trains have reclining seats and tables, and some also offer free Wi-Fi and power outlets, making your travel time more comfortable.

Operating Area

Green Car services on local trains are available in the following areas.

Route Maps
  • Some trains operate without Green Cars.
  • This differs from the Green Cars found on limited express, express, and Shinkansen trains.
  • Transfers are permitted only when changing to a train traveling in the same direction without exiting the ticket gates.

When using Green Cars on local trains, the following surcharges apply in addition to the basic fare.

  • Green Car Ticket (Suica) applies when you purchase and record your Green Car ticket on a Mobile Suica or a Suica card.
  • If you buy a Green Car ticket (paper ticket) at the station or on the train, it is sold at the paper ticket fare. If you purchase a Green Car ticket on board because the station ticket vending machines are crowded, it will be sold at the paper ticket fare.
  • If you use your remaining balance to purchase a Green Car ticket (paper ticket), it will be sold at the paper ticket fare.
  • If you are traveling only between Atami and Numazu stations on the Tokaido Line, please purchase a Green Car ticket (paper ticket) at the station. The Green Car ticket costs 750 yen year-round.
  • Green Car tickets are valid for one trip per day. Please apply for a refund at the JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-Madoguchi) counter at major JR East stations within the validity period. For Mobile Suica, use the app to request a refund.
  • When riding in a Green Car, a Local Train Green Car Ticket is required even if you are standing in the aisle or deck area. If the Green Car is full and you would like to move to a ordinary car, please ask a Green Car Attendant.

Purchasing a pass

"Suica Green Car Tickets" are sold at ticket vending machines displaying the transportation IC logo at stations where Green Cars stop.

  • Paper Tickets

    You can purchase Green Car tickets (paper tickets) at ticket vending machines with the IC logo located outside the ticket gates at stations where the Green Car stops, or at the JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-Madoguchi) in major stations.

    • Green Car tickets (paper tickets) are sold at a higher fare than Green Car Ticket (Suica), even if you buy them at the station before boarding.

How To Board

For Suica

  • Touch your Suica card to the "Green Ticket Information Reader" located above your seat.

  • Touching your Suica to the Green Ticket Information Reader changes the indicator light from red (vacant) to green (occupied).

    • If you change seats on the same train, please touch the card again at the new seat.
    • If you are transferring to another train at an intermediate station, touch the card once before getting off and again after the transfer.

For paper tickets

After boarding, seats with red lights above them indicate vacant seats.
An attendant will come to check your Green Car ticket, so please present your paper ticket at that time.
