Now Available: Suica Shopping Service! Service Starts Monday, March 22, 2004
East Japan Railway Company
February 10, 2004
A single Suica card is all users need to take trains or shop.
With purchases just a touch away, everyday shopping will never be the same.
Starting Monday, March 22, Suica cards can be used for shopping at stores in areas where the cards are valid for railway travel. Users need only their Suica card, and purchasing is done the same way as passing through ticket gates. The service saves time by eliminating the inconvenience of handling money and waiting for change. Shopping is quick and convenient, and the cards can be left in pass holders during transactions.
The service will play a key role in promoting convenience stores, restaurants, and other businesses around stations by attracting customers, cardholders of more than 7.8 million Suica cards that have been issued. JR East plans to offer the service on the Shinkansen, in the Sendai area, and elsewhere. View Suica, a card doubling as a credit card, has also been offered.
JR East will introduce quick Suica shopping for everyday purchases at all in-station stores in the near future.
JR East plans
to expand the service to 1,000 shops through further adoption by businesses
in and around stations and in other urban areas.
