April 13, 2004

The railway and bus companies using "Passnet Cards", "Bus Kyotsu Cards" and "Suica Cards" have agreed to develop an IC card that can be used on all member transport operators in the Kanto Region.

To achieve this, companies currently issuing the "Passnet Card" or "Bus Kyotsu Card" will employ the system to allow introduction of their own IC cards.

Implementation of IC cards that can be used mutually throughout the Kanto region will begin in FY 2006 and expanded as each participating company's systems are completed.

  • "The Passnet Card" is a magnetic stored-fare card which can be used interchangeably on major public and private railways in the Kanto area.
  • "The Bus Kyotsu Card" is a magnetic stored-fare card which can be used on many buses in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba Prefectures.
  • "The Suica card" is an IC stored-fare or commuter pass card which can be used on JR East in the Kanto area and on the Tokyo Monorail and Tokyo Waterfront Railway.
