JR East to Introduce New Service for Green Cars (first-class cars) Added to Local Trains, and to Increase the Number of Trains Operating on the Shonan-Shinjuku and Other Lines

In conjunction with the new timetable scheduled to take effect this autumn, JR East plans to add green cars to local trains, and to increase the number of trains operating on the Shonan-Shinjuku and other lines.

[Features of the New Services]

  • Green Cars can be used with commuter passes, which was previously not possible.
    In addition, Green commuter pass prices will also be reduced.
  • The "Green Car Suica System" which uses the Suica non-contact IC (smart) card system will be introduced and on-board ticket checking will no longer be necessary with the start of Green Car operation on the Shonan-Shinjuku line (Utsunomoiya and Maebashi ~ Zushi and Odawara), Utsunomiya line (Ueno ~ Utsunomiya) and Takasaki line (Ueno ~ Maebashi).
  • Green Attendants will be on board in Green Cars operating on the Shonan- Shinjuku, Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines. In addition to checking tickets, these Green Attendants will also start on-board sales service of drinks and other items.

[Increase of the Number of Trains Operating on the Shonan-Shinjuku Line and Other Lines]

  • The number of trains operating on the Shonan-Shinjuku line will greatly increase, and travel times will be shortened.
  • One train service for Ueno will be added during the morning rush hour on each of the Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines.
  1. New Fares and Use for Green Cars Added to Local Trains
    • Passengers will be able to board the Green Cars using commuter passes.
      * In conjunction with this, the "Green Coupon Tickets" that combine the basic fare and the supplemental Green Car fare will be abolished.
    • Fare chart of the Green Cars will be revised.
      * In conjunction with this, the "Daytime Green Car Fare Coupon Tickets" will be abolished.
    • "Green commuter pass" prices will be reduced.
      The new fares and use will also be applied to Green Cars operating on the Tokaido, Yokosuka, Sobu (Rapid Service) and other lines in addition to the Shonan-Shinjuku, Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines.

  2. How to Use the "Green Car Suica System"
    (1)  Before using a Green Car, the passenger purchases a Suica Green ticket (electronic ticket) with the balance on his / her Suica card at a Suica ticket vending machine located at stations where local trains with Green Cars stop.
    (Passengers with Suica Green commuter passes do not need to purchase a Suica Green ticket.)

    (2)  After boarding the Green Car, the passenger touches the Suica Green ticket (or Suica Green commuter pass) to the Suica Green Ticket Reader R/W (Reader/Writer) located above the seat.
    (3)  The lamp light remain "green" when the passenger is in the segment where his / her Suica Green ticket is valid. In this case, on-board ticket checking is unnecessary. Note that if the lamp light turn red when the passenger is out of the valid segment.
    This "Green Car Suica System" will be introduced to Green Cars operating on the Shonan-Shinjuku, Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines. Introduction to Green Cars operating on the Tokaido, Yokosuka, Sobu (Rapid Service) and other lines is scheduled for spring 2006.
    The "Mobile Suica" (mobile phones with Suica functions), scheduled for introduction in the second half of fiscal year 2005, is also planned to support this "Green Car Suica System".
  3. How to Use the Green Car Suica System
  4. Start of Newly-built Green Car
    • JR East plans to add Green Cars to all local trains operating on the Shonan- Shinjuku line and approximately 15% of those trains originating and ending at Ueno station on the Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines within approximately one month after the timetable revision scheduled for this autumn.
      (Green Cars will be added to approximately 80% of the local trains operating on the Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines by the start of fiscal year 2006.)
    • JR East is successively introducing new Green Cars in preparation for the timetable revision scheduled for this autumn. However, starting from around July until the day before the new timetable takes effect, these new Green Cars will be used as normal cars in some trains originating and ending at Ueno and Ikebukuro stations on the Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines. During this period, passengers will be able to use these new Green Cars with just a regular ticket or commuter pass.
  5. Increase of the Number of Trains Operating on the Shonan-Shinjuku, Utsunomiya and Takasaki Lines (Outline)
    • In conjunction with the timetable revision scheduled for this autumn, JR East plans to greatly increase the number of trains operating on the Shonan-Shinjuku line (weekdays: 38 round trips -> 64 round trips). In addition, the travel time of the fastest trains will also be shortened to 27 minutes (2 minute reduction) between Shinjuku and Yokohama, and 73 minutes (11 minute reduction) between Shinjuku and Odawara.
    • One train service for Ueno will be added during the morning rush hour on each of the Utsunomiya and Takasaki lines starting from the new timetable scheduled for this autumn.
