Development of a road-rail welder for Shinkansen track
Upon comparative study of methods for rail welding required for replacing rails in continuous welded rail sections for Shinkansen track, we found that gas pressure welding achieved superior repair work quality. However, the welding machinery is heavy, making it difficult to transport. Up until now, we had set up temporary welding field depots near the worksite, where we did welding work. To alleviate the need to set up such field depots, we developed welding machinery and a truck crane (road-rail vehicle) to transport that machinery. That reduced loss from travel time and allowed for welding work adapted to a variety of worksite conditions. Furthermore, using a road-rail crane to set up welding machinery to rails makes for short and safe setup work. And as sufficient time can be secured for welding work, high-quality construction in a short amount of time becomes possible.
