Types of Tickets

  • A basic fare ticket is necessary for all train travel.
  • For traveling on a Shinkansen (bullet train) or a Limited Express train, you need to purchase a super (limited) express train ticket in addition to a basic fare ticket. (When you will use a reserved seat, a super (limited) express reserved seat ticket is required. When you will use a non-reserved seat, a super (limited) express non-reserved seat ticket is required.)
  • To travel in a Green Car (first class) of a Shinkansen or Limited Express train, you will need a super (limited) express ticket and a Green Car reserved seat ticket in addition to a basic fare ticket.
  • To travel in a PREMIUM GREEN of Limited Express train, you will need a limited express ticket and a Green Car (PREMIUM GREEN) reserved seat ticket in addition to a basic fare ticket.
  • To travel in GranClass of a Shinkansen, a super (limited) express ticket and a Green Car reserved seat ticket (GranClass) are required in addition to a basic fare ticket.
  • To travel in a Green Car (first class) of a Rapid train or Local train, you will need a ticket for a Green Car seat on a Local train in addition to a basic fare ticket.

Fare Classifications

Adults and children are classified as follows.

Note: If tickets are used together with child Suica cards (including Welcome Suica cards for children) after train schedule revisions on March 13, 2021, the child's basic fare + seat ticket pricing will still be applied when they use a basic fare ticket, regular express train ticket, or a reserved seating ticket from the last day that they are 11 years old (the day before their birthday) until the March 31st after they turn 12.

Fares and Charges for a Child

  • A child's basic fare, super (limited) express, express and reserved seat ticket is 50 % of the adult price.
  • Green Car tickets and some supplemental tickets are the same as the adult price.

Fares and Charges for Toddlers and Babies

Toddlers and babies travel for free. However, they need a child ticket in the following cases.

  1. When three or more toddlers/babies accompany one adult or a child (tickets are required for the third and any additional toddlers/babies).
  2. When an toddler or baby occupies his or her own reserved seat, Green Car seat or berth, etc.
  3. When a toddler travels alone.
