The Yamagata Shinkansen runs between Tokyo and Yamagata/Shinjo. Operation began in 1992 after the section between Fukushima and Yamagata on the Ōu Main Line was converted to allow the Shinkansen to pass directly through.
The line was extended to Shinjo in 1999.
The following train types operate on the Yamagata Shinkansen.
The E8 series is a new type of train that began operating on March 16, 2024. The concept behind the design is “a train that weaves together the bountiful landscape with spirit of the people”. Carrying on the legacy of the E3 series’s design, which deeply tied to the local region, the E8 series features a seamless safflower yellow gradation reflecting the Yamagata landscape and emotional connections with those living far away. The nose length was extended to 9m in an aerodynamically optimized “arrow line” shape for a maximum operating speed of 300 km/h and a more comfortable riding experience for passengers.
