The Yamagata Shinkansen runs between Tokyo and Yamagata/Shinjo. Operation began in 1992 after the section between Fukushima and Yamagata on the Ōu Main Line was converted to allow the Shinkansen to pass directly through.
The line was extended to Shinjo in 1999.
The E8 Series is a new type of train that began operation on March 16, 2024, and its design concept is "A train that weaves together rich local cultures and hearts." Carrying on the image of its predecessor, the E3 Series, which is rooted in the local community, the seamless safflower yellow color expresses the connection between Yamagata's local culture and the hearts of people in faraway lands. To improve speed by operating at a maximum operating speed of 300 km/h, while also providing a comfortable interior space for many passengers, the front of the train has a 9m front length and an "arrow line shape" optimized through aerodynamic analysis.
