POINT1
Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, where the National Fireworks Competition, said to be the highest peak in Japan, is held, is located almost in the center of Akita Prefecture, surrounded by the Ou Mountains and the Dewa Hills, and is a place blessed with beautiful nature in all four seasons. It is about 3 hours from Tokyo on Akita Shinkansen. When you leave the west exit of JR Ōmagari Station, you will be greeted by a large firework ball that symbolizes "Daisen City, the city of fireworks."
The "Omagari Fireworks" in the summer are famous, but the "Spring Chapter" and "Autumn Chapter" are also worth checking out. The "Spring Chapter" in April features the "New Fireworks Collection," a competition where young fireworks makers show off their latest creations, and the "Fireworks of the World and Japan," a collaboration inviting fireworks companies from overseas. "Spring Chapter" is the only time throughout the year where you can see international fireworks!
The "Autumn Chapter" in October, entitled "Fireworks Art Festival," focuses on "showy fireworks" as a show. Fireworks by some of Japan's leading fireworks makers, as well as fireworks by local fireworks makers with themes that change every year, will light up the autumn night sky. Autumn has low humidity and the air is clear, so the fireworks look even clearer. Enjoy the charms of both spring and autumn.
POINT 2
About a 10-minute walk from JR Ōmagari Station, you will find the Hanabi-Amu Fireworks Traditional Culture Preservation Museum, a facility where you can experience the charm of fireworks to the fullest. This is a base for the preservation of fireworks culture, conveying the history and charm of fireworks, including the Omagari Fireworks, through numerous exhibits, such as the mechanisms of fireworks and panels displaying past winners of the national fireworks competition, the Omagari Fireworks. If you come here, you can enjoy fireworks on a deeper level!
The main part of the facility is the Observation Exhibition Hall on the 4th floor, which has a great view. Panels are displayed that show you the origins of fireworks festivals, the types of fireworks, the secrets behind their production, and how they work. You can learn about the manufacturing process of firework balls and experience the size and weight of up to a 10-inch ball. QR codes are posted in various places in the explanations, and they are available in multiple languages (English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean).
The "Hanabi Creation Workshop" is popular among children. You can line up colorful firework models and launch fireworks of your own design on the monitor. It's exciting to make your own original fireworks♪ It's even more fun after looking around the exhibition. Of course, Adult can enjoy it to their heart's content too, so it's recommended!
If you visit, you must experience the "Hanabi Theater." 4K footage of the "Omagari Fireworks" is projected onto four screens at the front, top, left and right. The sight of the fireworks raining down with powerful sounds gives you the same sense of realism as if you were at the festival! In addition, special exhibitions related to fireworks are held from time to time on the third floor, so be sure to stop by.
The "Spring Chapter" and "Autumn Chapter" are less crowded than the summer fireworks, so they are recommended for those who want to enjoy the fireworks at a leisurely pace. If you visit "Spring" and "Autumn" and "Hanabi-Amu", you will look forward to the summer "Omagari Fireworks" even more. Why not try this moving experience?
