Service interval: Tohoku Main Line and other lines

  • Zipangu

The Zipangu debuted with the Iwate Destination Campaign that ran from April to June 2012. To promote tourism in Iwate Prefecture and in Tohoku in general, 485 series cars were updated for resort train service. The name of the train was selected from entries received in a public contest. Konjiki-do (the Golden Hall) at Chuson-ji Temple is one of the reasons why Marco Polo referred to "Zipangu" (Japan) as the "Land of Gold" in his "The Travels of Marco Polo," and Zipangu was therefore selected for the train bound for this international sightseeing destination.

The exterior of the train is ink black for the flow of water and gray for the mountains, with a gold or gold leaf appearance to symbolize the prosperity of Hiraizumi. This appearance expresses "resplendence with composure and dignity."
