The Former Kaichi School Building, a National Treasure

  • Experience the magnificent natural beauty of the Northern Alps and the rich history of the castle town of Matsumoto, Shinshu (Nagano). A cultural landmark of the city, the Former Kaichi School Building is renowned for its distinctive blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles. Designed and constructed in 1876 (Meiji 9) by Seiju Tateishi, a master carpenter from Matsumoto, it became the first modern school building to be designated a National Treasure in 2019. Experience the spirit of Meiji-era learning in this beautifully preserved schoolhouse, where the elegant design still evokes the atmosphere of Japan's early modernization.

Enjoy a drink at Lounge Komorebi in Car 5.
Relax with a drink while watching the evening scenery from the train window. Lounge Komorebi (Car 5) can be utilized at any time of day, except for when Car 5 is being used to serve meals. Lounge Komorebi is closed from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM for cleaning and disinfecting.
