Affectionately referred to as the "Hot Spring Line with Deep, Narrow Tracks," the Riku-East Line saw the debut of the Resort Minori in response to the passenger requests for truly fulfilling travel. Meaning "fulfilling" or "fruitful," the word Minori in the name comes from suggestions from the public and signifies a fruitful harvest, a fulfilling hot spring visit and the abundance of beautiful tree colors in the fall, all excellent examples of the attractions a trip on the Riku-East Line offers.

A three-car train pulled by a remodeled KiHa 48 diesel locomotive services the line. With a deep scarlet and black lacquer base recalling the brilliant fall leaves that decorate the region, the cars are highlighted with metallic gold lines to represent the full ears of rice that can be seen from the train. Colored in warm hues, the interior is designed with spacious spacious legroom (1,200-millimeter seat pitch) for a relaxing, comfortable journey. From the large windows in the Observation Space in the lead car, travelers can enjoy to their heart’s content beautiful scenery such as fields of rice rippling into the distance and Naruko Canyon.
