Automatic Ticket Gates

When using an automatic ticket gate at a station, keep in mind the following precautions.

  • Insert your ticket into the ticket insertion slot.
  • When entering the automatic ticket gate, take your ticket at the other end.
  • When exiting the ticket gate, one-way tickets are collected by the automatic ticket gate.
    Note: If using a round-trip ticket, be sure to collect it when exiting the automatic ticket gate.

The tickets (commuter pass size large tickets and short distance small tickets) that can be used in automatic ticket gates have a black or brown magnetic surface on the reverse side.

Shinkansen Automatic Ticket Gates

Shinkansen Automatic Ticket Gates

Passengers with multiple tickets should put them on top of each other and then insert them into the Shinkansen automatic ticket gates at the same time. You can insert up to four tickets at one time.

Note: basic fare tickets and super (limited) express train tickets can be inserted together.

Staff Attended Gate

Staff Attended Gate

There are tickets which cannot be used in automatic ticket gates. When you have one of those listed below, please pass through a staff attended gate.

  • Tickets on which the reverse side is not black or brown
  • Long and narrow tickets
  • Tickets that have been stapled together
  • JR EAST PASS
  • Japan Rail Pass
  • JR TOKYO Wide Pass
