Delay and Cancellation Policy

When Trains are not in Operation

Before purchasing a ticket

Sales of tickets are canceled for areas where service has been suspended. However, tickets will be sold if buses or other means of transportation are available, or if another route becomes available.

If you already have a ticket

Full fares *1 and charges *2 will be refunded for trips that are canceled due to suspension of train service. If your trip is cancelled while in progress, fares for the unused portion of your trip will be refunded. In this case, charges for cancelled limited express trains will be fully refunded.

If operations are cancelled

If operations are cancelled while you are riding a limited express or express train and before you reach your destination, you can ride the limited express or express trains that follow. In this case, limited express or express train charges for the interrupted trip will be fully refunded. However, only the unused portion of your limited express or express train charge will be refunded when 1) trains are cancelled between Shinagawa and Tokyo (including the Tokaido shinkansen), 2) trains are cancelled between Osaka and Shin Osaka, or 3) the Tohoku, Jôetsu, or Nagano shinkansen operating from Omiya to Ueno or Tokyo or between Ueno and Tokyo are cancelled.

You can return to your station of departure without charge, and your fare will be fully refunded.

  • *1 Fares are defined as the cost of a ticket to ride a regular train.
  • *2 Charges are defined as the additional cost for riding a Shinkansen, limited express, express train or Green Car.
