Nagano's symbol Zenkoji Temple has drawn a large number of people of any belief since ancient times. Today, some six million people visit the temple per year. In Nagano City, which flourished with Zenkoji as its center, travelers can see historical buildings worth visiting.

Located next to Zenkoji Temple are famous soba shops. And don't forget to buy an oyaki, a special food made in Shinshu.

When it comes to food, soba is definitely the dish of choice in Shinshu. The secret to Shinshu soba (buckwheat noodles) is said to be the frosts that freeze the buckwheat in the night due to the large temperature drop. A rich variety of soba noodles are available. To expand your horizons a bit further from Nagano Station, we recommend Obasute Station, known for its beautiful terraced fields. From the station, some 2,000 terraced fields are visible, making up scenery famous throughout Japan. It is known as one of the Three Great Train Views and one of the Three Great Moon-view Villages of Japan. Obasute is six stations down the JR Shinonoi Line from Nagano Station.

Oyaki – a Healthy Japanese Fast Food

Oyaki is a stuffed food native to Nagano. Coming in many different flavors, oykai is made by wrapping an ingredient in a flour skin like a dumpling, then baking. Particularly healthy versions include vegetable and mountain vegetable oyaki. A great accompaniment to a stroll around town!
