Fireworks go up during the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival, held on the night before the traditional Tanabata Festival, the biggest summer event in Sendai.
It is very unusual in Japan for a fireworks display to be performed on such a large scale in the middle of a city. The fireworks are launched from the banks of the Hirose-gawa River that flows through Sendai, and they can be viewed from 360 degrees around the city, a unique feature. The fireworks are launched by the Sendai pyrotechnicians who create them, giving spectators a first look at the year's new creations.
