About 70 minutes from Tokyo on the Nagano Shinkansen, Karuizawa is a popular highland location for people to come to escape the summer heat and to enjoy the beauty of autumn. Among the many places to gaze at the autumn colors are the former Mikasa Hotel, an Important Cultural Property of Japan, surrounded by beautiful contrasting colors as well as Kumoba Pond – nicknamed Swan Lake – wherein the trees reflect their beauty, and the autumn trees at Shiraito (White Thread) Falls, named for the endless strands of white water that cascade down.

More than anything, the greatest attraction of the autumn scenery at Kawaguchiko is the great Mount Fuji rising up in the background. Between 400 and 500 maples are planted along the shores of Kawaguchiko, and the lake reflecting their beauty during the peak of the season is a sight to behold. During the autumn foliage season, come to enjoy the Fuji Kawaguchiko Koyo Festival. Among the attractions is the Maple Corridor on the Kawaguchiko Art Museum street. When the corridor is lighted up at night, it is so beautiful, it's like an illusion. Also spectacular are the autumn trees at Aoigahara Jukai.
