The Kirakira Uetsu was developed as a fun way to travel for those on their way to Murakami, Atsumi Hot Springs, Tsuruoka and Sakata on the Uetsu Main Line. A four-car, remodeled 485 series train, the Kirakira Uetsu is a limited express with easy-access observation areas in car numbers one and four. The scenery along this line of the Sea of Japan is simply amazing. Car number two is a lounge car with a teahouse (kiosk) and space for sitting back. Among the teahouse's offerings are locally brewed sakes and the Kirakira Bento packed with culinary ideas from the conductor.

Service on the Uetsu Main Line (Hakushin) between Niigata and Sakata is primarily on the weekends.
