Highlights on the Hiking Course

This time the Ekikara Hiking will be along a hiking course which will enable the hikers to thoroughly enjoy Japan's ancient capital of Kamakura. The hikers will go around to the scenic spots and historic sites of Kamakura, including the Great Buddha of Kamakura, the second largest Buddha statue in Japan after the Great Buddha in Nara's Todai-ji Temple, and Hase-dera Temple, an ancient temple dating back to before the Kamakura Period. Furthermore, both of these places have volunteer English-speaking guides so you will be able to enjoy Japan's ancient capital of Kamakura even more as you hear about the history of Kamakura while sightseeing.

Great Buddha of Kamakura

Recommended Great Buddha of Kamakura

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is the principle object of worship at Kotoku-in Temple and is famous as an outdoor seated great Buddha. Approximately 11.3 meters tall and weighing approximately 121 tons, it is the second biggest Buddha statue in Japan after the Great Buddha (the Rushana Buddha) in Nara's Todai-ji Temple. Even now, over 750 years after it was constructed, the statue retains most of its original form and it has become the Mecca of Kamakura tourism. We also recommend that you enter the interior of the Great Buddha.

* Admission fee for Kotoku-in Temple (home of the Great Buddha of Kamakura): 200 yen for adults and students age 13-18 and 150 yen for elementary school students age 6-12. There is a separate admission fee of 20 yen for entering the interior of the statue.
* There are explanations in English given by volunteer guides.

Hase-dera Temple

Recommended Hase-dera Temple

This is an ancient temple dating back to before the Kamakura Period. It features a number of important temple buildings and the principle object of worship, a Kannon with 11 heads, stands 9.18 meters tall and is said to be the tallest wooden Kannon statue in Japan. Inside the temple grounds made colorful by the various flowering plants in each of the four seasons, there is an Observation Platform from which you can look out over the sea and town of Kamakura, enabling you to enjoy the beautiful views.

* Admission fee for entering the grounds of the Hase-dera Temple (home of the Hase Kannon): 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for elementary school students. Separate admission fees for entering the temple itself are required.
* There are explanations in English given by volunteer guides.
