At this shrine there is still a rock, the Saigyo Modoshi-Ishi, that tells the story of how a famous poet called Saigyo-hoshi was on a pilgrimage to Nikko when he encountered a child sitting on a large rock. It is said that when Saigyo asked the child for directions to the temples of Nikko the child’s response was so elegant that he realized he still had a lot more to learn and turned back.

This 28-meter vermilion-lacquered bridge spans the Daiyagawa River. A legend tells the story of the Priest Shodo who opened Mt. Nikkousan. The priest could not get across the raging rapids, so he called for divine protection, and two snakes appeared on each bank, tying together over the river making a bridge for the priest to cross.
