"Otate no Ran" was a battle between Kagekatsu of the Ueda Nagao clan and Kagetora of the Odawara Hojo clan over who should succeed Uesugi Kenshin. It is said that Mondonosuke Higuchi, who fought valiantly for Kagekatsu, took up residence in this area. The Snow Country Monument in Yasunari Kawabata's handwriting is in the park.

Suwa Shrine
The shrine that has watched over Yuzawa ever since the village was first established
This shrine is said to have been founded around 1200 years ago, at the same time as Yuzawa, then a village, was first established. The deity enshrined here is Tateminakata-no-Mikoto. The current shrine was reconstructed in 1943, and the main building was moved to its present location when the Joetsu Shinkansen Line was built. The Tenmangu Shrine was built in 1783 on the Suwa Shrine grounds. The sacred Japanese cedar at Suwa Shrine is 400 years old and has been designated as a natural monument of Yuzawa.

The displays focus on "Snow Country," the novel by Yasunari Kawabata that is set in this town, and on the history and way of life in the snow country of Yuzawa. We particularly recommend the "Snow Country - The World of Japanese Paintings" gallery located on the first floor. On display are 14 paintings that depict various scenes from the novel, including "Yukiguni no Tsuki" by Tatsuo Takayama and "Kanjinchō" by Chusaku Ohyama both of whom are recipients of the Order of Cultural Merit.
