Advance Purchases from Outside Japan
An Exchange Order for the JR EAST PASS SPECIAL may be purchased outside Japan through a travel agent or online.
- Step 1. Purchase an Exchange Order from a travel agent. Exchange Orders are available from travel agents with a computerized global distribution system (GDS)*.
- Step 2. After you arrive in Japan, take your Exchange Order to an exchange location. Your passport is required. You will receive your JR EAST PASS SPECIAL after confirmation of eligibility.

Note: Exchange Orders purchased overseas must be redeemed between Monday, April 1 and Friday, June 21, 2013. - Step 3. The JR EAST PASS SPECIAL is valid for 10 days from the day you receive it, and can be used on your choice of any three of those 10 days.
*GDS is a computerized way for travel agents to make reservations and issue tickets.
- For Travel Agents
- When selling an Exchange Order with GDS (global distribution system), enter "9B" as the carrier code, "XZJ" for the departure, and "XZP" for the arrival.

- Step 1.
Purchase an Exchange Order on the JR East Website.
- Step 2. Your Exchange Order will be sent to your e-mail address.
- Step 3. After you arrive in Japan, take the printout of the Exchange Order sent by e-mail to a designated exchange location. Your passport is required. You will receive your JR EAST PASS SPECIAL after confirmation of eligibility.

Your Exchange Order will be an e-ticket. Print out a copy that shows the details of the e-ticket (name, reservation number, airline ticket number) and take it with you.
Redeem your Exchange Order for a pass between Monday, April 1 and Friday, June 21, 2013 at one of the exchange locations listed below. The pass is valid for three days of your choice during the 10-day period from the day you receive it.
Purchasing in Japan
The JR EAST PASS SPECIAL can be purchased in Japan at Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, Tokyo Station and major JR East stations. For further details, see the list of exchange and sales locations below.
Notes:
- Present your passport to the pass office staff. You will receive a pass after confirmation of eligibility.
- The pass is valid for three days of your choice during a 10-day period from the day it is purchased.
- Only one JR EAST PASS SPECIAL can be purchased in Japan per stay in Japan.

Eligibility
The JR EAST PASS SPECIAL is available exclusively for visitors from abroad who enter Japan under the entry status of "Temporary Visitor". Both of the below two conditions must be met for purchase and use.
- The pass user must have a passport issued by a country other than Japan.
(日本国籍のお客様は使用できません。) - The pass user must enter Japan as a temporary visitor and have "Temporary Visitor" stamped in their passport as shown at right.
- The status of temporary visitor is established in Japanese immigration law and permits stays in the country of up to 90 days for purposes such as sightseeing. Visitors desiring to enter Japan for sightseeing will receive a stamp, as shown at right, saying "Temporary Visitor" in their passport by the immigration officer.
Notes:
- The passport immigration stamp must be presented for confirmation when exchanging for or purchasing a JR EAST PASS SPECIAL in Japan.
- If the above conditions cannot be confirmed as being met, travelers may not be allowed to purchase a pass or redeem an Exchange Order for a pass. Also, please carry your passport when using your pass. It may be required by JR staff for identity confirmation.
- Visitors with dual citizenship in Japan and another country will not be able to use a JR EAST PASS SPECIAL if they entered Japan on their Japanese passport.
Seat Reservations
Making a Reservation at a Station
Visit a JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) or Travel Service Center (View Plaza), located in most major JR East stations, and present your JR EAST PASS SPECIAL to reserve a seat.

Making an Online Reservation
Some JR-East Shinkansen and limited express seats can be reserved online.
- Note that reserved seats may fill up. Book early to ensure your seat.
- If no reserved seats are available, please use the unreserved seating. JR East does not make refunds for the difference between reserved and unreserved seats.

See eastern Japan with the JR EAST PASS SPECIAL!
Eastern Japan has many attractive places to visit. There are numerous locations to enjoy Japanese scenery with cherry blossoms and new spring growth, lots of historical World Heritage Sites such as at Hiraizumi, and excellent cuisines to taste throughout the region. And of particular note is a huge tourism campaign from April to June for Sendai and Miyagi. Highlights of the area include the beautiful scenery of Matsushima Bay, the excellent beef tongue of Sendai, and the hot springs of Naruko-onsen-kyo Hot Spring Village. Use a JR EAST PASS SPECIAL and travel around eastern Japan.
