Cases of transport disruption due to buildup of snow on signals occur every year, making countermeasures against snow buildup important issues in areas with heavy snowfall. Measures attempted included prevention of snow buildup by blowing air from fans and using lens heaters, but none of those have been able to completely prevent snow buildup.
We thus developed a signal hood using Clearheat® (exothermic clear resin sheets) enclosing the entire lamp where heat is generated by applying a current to a transparent conducting layer. This product attached to the front of the signal hood achieves high snow melting performance with little electrical power consumption, so good results were gained in field tests.
Also, unnecessary heat generation is suppressed by incorporating thermostat to conserve energy. In this way, we can expect signals with these hoods to be more environmentally friendly.
