Development of a Treatment Material for Horizontal Joints (Morutarumoren) in Steel Plate Aseismic Reinforcement Construction

Reinforcing viaducts columns to strengthen them against seismic activity involves construction using steel plate lining. This method requires that joints between steel plates be treated so that the mortar filler does not leak from them.

We have been using a combination of welding and sealant application to handle this issue, but welding still presents a fire risk, while insufficient sealant thickness may lead to mortar filler leakage.

To counteract these issues, we have developed a U-shaped rubber component (product name: Morutarumoren) which is sandwiched in between the upper and lower edges of two steel reinforcement plates. This fix is a simple and way to prevent mortar filler leaks and improve safety and reliability while further shortening construction time and reducing cost.
